Teaching

Please contact me if you are interested in an introductory trial lesson or have any other questions about cello lessons, thank you.

I understand that each student will learn at a different pace, and my goal is for all students to feel engaged and challenged while also having fun along the way.

Our class meets around three times a semester for a mandatory studio class to share our progress with our peers, and to learn to provide each other with both positive feedback and constructive criticism.

A typical cello lesson will involve a scale/arpeggio, a shorter etude, and a longer solo piece.  Students will work through scales to improve their listening and become familiar with the various patterns and positions on the cello.  Practicing the etudes will build a student’s technical foundation necessary for playing the solo pieces.  In the solo work, we will emphasize musicality and interpretation, which will enable the student to find their artistic voice and effectively communicate the music to an audience.

We will learn how to build efficient practicing habits by developing strategies to optimize our practice time at home.  Students should work to identify problems and focus their efforts on difficult sections of the assignments, rather than just playing pieces through from beginning to end.  Deliberate practice through using a combination of analysis, problem-solving, and focused repetition in short sections is more productive than practicing through mindless repetition alone.
